M&A presents 2020 GeoDaze symposium winner

M&A is proud once again to sponsor the Montgomery Prize — a $2,000 cash award — for the best oral presentation at GeoDaze, an annual, student-run symposium organized by the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona. Now in its 48th year, GeoDaze was established to give students in the geosciences an opportunity to showcase their research and receive valuable feedback from faculty, alumni, and peers. This year, GeoDaze was held virtually on April 23 and 24, due to Covid-19 physical distancing restrictions. The Montgomery Prize was presented by Megan Zivic, P.G., a hydrogeologist at M&A and alumna of the University. For more information on the event, click here.

The 2020 Montgomery Prize winner was Haiyang Kehoe for his presentation, “Supershear transition across a fault stepover observed during the 2017 magnitude 7.7 Komandorsky Islands earthquake.” Kehoe is a third-year Ph.D. student in the Global Seismology and Tectonics (GSAT) group at the University of Arizona. Using seismic waves recorded around the world, he images earthquake ruptures to reveal the physical mechanisms that control slip on faults, improving our understanding of earthquake source processes and their associated hazards.
