Michele Robertson, an environmental permitting specialist with M&A’s Phoenix-area group, was an invited speaker at the Gatekeeper Regulatory Roundup, the annual conference of the Environmental Professionals of Arizona (“EPAZ”). The event was held in Scottsdale on February 15–16. Robertson’s talk, “Is Deep Injection a Disposal Option in Arizona?” focused on the regulatory aspects of injecting brines and other wastes with high concentrations of total dissolved solids — a practice that was prohibited in Arizona until recently. The talk covered disposal options and their relative costs, regulatory issues, policy implications, and technical challenges associated with deep injection.
The former manager of ADEQ’s Groundwater Section, Robertson joined M&A last year, adding valuable expertise in the areas of aquifer protection permitting, reclaimed water permitting, AZPDES, voluntary actions, WQARF, and CERCLA.
