This week, the Tucson office hosted the 2026 Arizona Hydrological Society (AHS) Halpenny Intern Scholarship recipient, Alexander (Lex) Rowell<\/strong>, a senior in hydrology and atmospheric sciences at the University of Arizona.<\/p>\n

M&A professionals Juliet McKenna, Alex Wood, and Marleigh Chidester<\/strong> worked with Lex to evaluate the effectiveness of The Nature Conservancy\u2019s restoration project on Granite Creek in Prescott, located on Yavapai Prescott Indian Tribe (YPIT) land. Working alongside Juliet, Alex, and Marleigh, Lex determined infiltration rates for various portions of the project area, reviewed engineering plans for watershed restoration structures, estimated evapotranspiration, and used these metrics to estimate annual recharge from watershed restoration. Lex also evaluated correlations between wells and USGS gage and soil moisture and estimated losing and gaining surface water between USGS gages. Great job, Lex!<\/p>\n

Each year since 1996, the AHS Tucson chapter awards the Halpenny scholarship to a student enrolled in a hydrology related discipline at any Arizona college or university. The award\u2014named for Arizona hydrology pioneer Leonard Halpenny who initiated the scholarship\u2014includes a cash prize as well as the opportunity to gain practical experience with water resource consulting firms and environmental organizations in the Tucson area.<\/p>\n
