The winner of the geosciences Montgomery Prize at the GeoDaze 2012 symposium is Andrew Laskowski for his presentation, “Detrital zircon geochronology of Cordilleran retroarc foreland basin strata, western North America.” The symposium was held last week at the University of Arizona. Andrew received a $2,000 award for the best overall oral presentation.

A master’s candidate, Andrew has worked with George Gehrels and Peter DeCelles for the last 2 years to determine the provenance of sandstones deposited in the Cordilleran foreland basin of western North America. His work has entailed U-Pb dating of detrital zircon grains as well as reconstructing the chronology of mountain-building events and the development of drainage systems in the western North America over the past 150 million years.
